Special Educational Needs

 Definition of SEN

A child has special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

A child of compulsory school age is considered to have a learning difficulty or disability if they:

  1. Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
  2. Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.

For children under compulsory school age, they are considered to have SEN if they fall within the above definition or would do so if special educational provision were not made for them.

Special educational provision means provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for other children of the same age in mainstream schools

Key Principles from the SEND Code of Practice

  • SEN is not the same as disability, but there is overlap. Many children who have SEN may also be disabled under the Equality Act 2010.
  • SEN falls into four broad areas of need:
    • Communication and interaction (e.g., speech and language difficulties, autism)
    • Cognition and learning (e.g., dyslexia, moderate/severe learning difficulties)
    • Social, emotional and mental health difficulties
    • Sensory and/or physical needs (e.g., visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities)

SEND Admission Arrangements

The school adheres to the admission policy of the Talentum Trust and therefore has no special provision under admission arrangements for limiting or promoting access for pupils with SEND who are without statements. It does, however, endeavour to provide appropriate support for pupils with a range of SEND. A child entering school with SEND arrangements already in place will automatically be placed at the appropriate stage on the Inclusion Register.
